IOPSA – Quo Vadis?

The institute is no different to most voluntary bodies in this day and age where the question may well be Quo Vadis – whither goest thou or modern parlance where are you going? IOPSA’s role in South Africa and into Africa has never been more critical. There are winds of change blowing about and most of them are not good winds and it is up to IOPSA to steer the good ship plumbing into steady waters with good wind behind it. Read more

Pipes VIII Conference – a review

This year’s Pipes VIII Conference, hosted by the Southern African Plastic Pipe Manufacturers’ Association (SAPPMA) at the Bytes Conference Centre in Midrand, highlighted the important role plastic pipes have to play in ensuring a country’s infrastructure is able to provide daily necessities such as clean drinking water and a working sewerage system. Read more

Reader surveys: and the winner is…

We thank all who responded to the reader survey that was conducted between March and July this year. The reader results are very helpful in guiding us as to editorial policy and direction. We would have loved to give everyone a prize but sadly there can be only one winner.

Congratulations to Carmen Schoultz of Bennet Plumbers in Port Elizabeth, who walks away with the Hisense flatscreen TV as prize!

Inherent design excellence – 2014 Cobra Design Competition

Innovative, sculptural and totally original is how the judges described the outstanding entries received in this year’s Cobra Design Competition, which called for kitchen mixers incorporating induction heating technology to generate instant on-demand hot water. South Africa’s student and professional designers more than rose to the occasion, with not two, but three main prize winners being selected for their ground-breaking mixer designs. Read more

The right valve for the job

Before determining which type of valve to use for a specific application, it’s vital that plumbers consider the advantages and disadvantages of each type of valve – not all were created equal

A valve is a device that controls the passage of fluid from one space to another, usually via a pipe or a duct of some sort. Valves are particularly important in plumbing because they control the flow of liquids from one area to another, whether controlling the supply of water or even controlling the drainage. October 2014

Two very important events in plumbing took place recently, the International Emerging Technology Symposium, and Plumbdrain. We can understand if you missed the International Emerging Technology Symposium since a ticket to the US might be a bit pricey at a time when the economy is not very favourable, but we hope that you at least made it to the local Plumbdrain.

Either way, you will find reviews of both these events in Plumbing Africa’s October edition 2014.

Continuing with our duty of informing and educating the industry, we have a look at an education and training programme in water and sanitation, and housing and habitation that is being implemented in India. Read more
