It says something about the state of the world when a big issue in the American presidential election is who can use which toilet. In South Africa this argument seems frivolous in the face of our problems and where, for example, many rural schools are so filthy and dangerous that they are an insult to pupils’ dignity.

How wetlands are vital to survival

We need to examine what we, as the broader water sector fraternity, are doing to save the most precious resource (besides air) for survival.

A recent two-day journey through the Langkloof/Baviaanskloof area of the southern Cape with the Department of Water and Sanitation, Department of Agriculture, GIZ, Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and Santam, revealed remarkable facts about wetlands. This wetland forms part of the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.
