Mike Goodrich of 3G Plumbing, talks about how he got to where he is today and what it takes to be the best.
Mike Goodrich has always enjoyed working with his hands and so, after matriculating from Benoni High School, he registered to do a 45-day plumbing course at Unique Training College. Goodrich’s grandfather and great-grandfather were both plumbers and, when Goodrich himself became a plumber, he became the third generation of Goodriches to take up the trade.
Once the course was completed, Trevor Rose of Hutton Plumbing in Gauteng offered Goodrich a job. He worked for Hutton Plumbing for two years, before taking his trade test at the testing centre in Olifantsfontein. Once he qualified as a plumber, Goodrich decided to start his own business. 3G Plumbing was named to celebrate Goodrich as the third-generation plumber in his family.
3G Plumbing is an owner-manager company and Goodrich’s duties include running the company; dealing with clients (for whom he compiles quotes); booking staff out on various jobs; sourcing materials; working on and inspecting sites to ensure that everything is in order; attending site safety meetings and contractors meetings; doing leak detections and pipe locations; installing solar systems; and doing drain camera inspections.
Since the company was established, 3G Plumbing has gone from strength to strength, with four teams out on the road every day.
“I am extremely proud of my group of guys and what they manage to accomplish every day,” Goodrich said. “They are always willing to work overtime and go that extra mile.”
3G Plumbing has been involved in some major projects, including the Sandton Sun Hotel’s bathroom revamp and the Sandton Garden Court’s 500-room revamp.
Goodrich’s professional life is guided by one simple creed: If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well. The company’s mission statement is ‘Bringing quality back into the industry’.
