Thomson Bros Trading has been in business since 1998 and continues to grow from strength to strength
Where it all began
Thomson Bros Trading (TBT) was started by Bryan Thomson, the late father of the current directors, Gary and Marshal Thomson, in 1998. Bryan Thomson, an engineer with an entrepreneurial spirit, developed a range of PVC valves and fittings for the local agricultural market.
Gary Thomson joined his father in 2000 after qualifying as an engineer. Shortly thereafter the family farm was sold and the business relocated to the current premises in Port Elizabeth, taking with them a few of the original staff members. Marshal Thomson, a chartered accountant, returned from abroad in 2004 to complete an MBA and joining the family business
As the business grew, the family looked to the east to expand the company’s product range. The first shipments of valves and fittings were received in 2004 and the next phase of the business development began. Ten years later, the business has grown beyond recognition into a major force in the African fluid-control industry. That commitment to quality products and customer service, so valued by the founder, continues today.
Products and services
The group offers a wide range of branded valves and fittings to the plumbing and hardware industry throughout southern Africa. The main brands – Venice brass valves and fittings, Ming galvanised and black fittings, Tommy PVC valves and fittings, and Gold Medal Joint Acceptance Scheme for Water Services Installation Components (JASWIC)-approved HDPE compression fittings – have become household names. All brands conform to the company’s vision of quality branded products at competitive prices or, to quote Bryan Thomson, “It’s easy to sell when you buy well”.
Ahead of the curve
What sets Thomson Bros apart from its competitors is its focus on quality assurance, customer service and operational excellence. The directors visit suppliers at least twice yearly to resolve issues, perform quality inspections and maintain long-standing relationships ensuring all products confirm to stringent quality standards. Technical excellence and after-sales support, values instilled by the founder, continue today. Each staff member shares in the profits of the company, ensuring each individual’s remuneration is directly linked to customer satisfaction. A new modern warehouse has allowed larger stock holding and expanded product ranges. A close relationship with logistics service providers has improved order turnaround times together ensuring improved operational excellence.
The company’s vision is to be the southern African supplier of choice in the fluid control product market.
In the future
Thomson Bros will continue to grow its customer base and expand its product range by listening to its customers and providing them with products that are competitively priced without compromising quality.
