Franco Habib, contracts manager and partner at Allsteam Engineering, is a third generation tradesperson who is an expert when it comes to all things hot water boilers and steam.
Habib’s grandfather originally started Allsteam Engineering 50 years ago, specialising in boiler prep and steam engineering. Since then, the team has grown to include many more family members, also branching out to other hot water systems and including a mechanical division.
When his grandfather passed away, Habib’s father (then only 17), took over the business along with his three brothers, later roping in his two sons and one of their cousins.
After completing matric at Alberton High, Habib’s father urged him to get a trade, so he opted for civil as he was interested in the water business. He did his apprenticeship, working at Shad Plumbing for six years. Habib has an N5 qualification in civil engineering.
Habib gets involved in all stages of a project, from design concept to site installation and handover — even maintenance.
In his career, Habib has been involved in some high profile projects, including Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Department of Infrastructure in Gauteng, and various Department of Public Works projects in Gauteng, ranging from prisons to military bases and hospitals.
For the love of the job
Habib gets involved in all stages of a project, from design concept to site installation and handover — even maintenance. He particularly enjoys being on site. The biggest challenge of his job? Dealing with lead times and getting payments in from clients on time. But as the company has worked with the government for so long as a term contractor, luckily they know what they’re doing.
