I woke up in the middle of the night and realised that the engineer is at the mercy of the plumber in terms of income. My reason for saying this is that the fee of the engineer is based on the tendered amount of the plumbing, if it had not been agreed to be based on time and cost.

We are working hard on new projects at the SABS, one project being the development of a standard for the design of water in buildings under the National Building Regulations. It is a long-awaited document and will serve as a standard for grey water, among others.

I find that certain people still don’t understand how to read, use, and apply the National Building Regulations — it is the cause of much misunderstanding and even conflict. Some government departments even require the architect to take on engineering work for which they are not educated, trained, or competent.

Activities around training and, more specific, further training, re-training and CPD courses abound. There is also a flow of new standards from the SABS, which are basically EN standards being converted to have a SANS number — much of it are duplications of what we already have.
