As our cover depicts, there is a gap when it comes to hot water storage tanks when they are no longer useful.
Our main story is about these tanks that must go for destruction after their useful life. We look at the difference between refurbishment and reconditioning – which is big – as well as where the GAP lies in the process.
IOPSA talks about the cost of cheap maintenance and when price is important but not the primary consideration. We also introduce a regular column from CETA and an interview with Malusi Shezi, the newly appointed CEO of CETA. The role that CETA plays in training is massive. As Plumbing Africa has so often stated – we need to be working together rather than seeking to build little empires which invariably collapse.
We congratulate JASWIC on their 40 years of service to the municipalities. While JASWIC may be considered ‘an evil necessity’, its role is essential when dealing with municipalities and the inspectorate. While many municipalities are dysfunctional (87%), JASWIC is used extensively by major municipalities and Metros, and like all of us are always in need of improvement.
Our pipes and fittings matrix/feature brings up to date the SANS accredited manufacturers and continues to make the point that if the manufacture/supplier is not SANS accredited – do not consider using their system.
IAPMO reinforces this message with their first in a series of three on understanding compliance, which is what professionals should be focused on.
We continue with our success stories on training as well as showing the successes of women in plumbing, notwithstanding the challenges they face. Our view is that women play a huge role in life and we recognise them monthly – not just once a year!
Valves, like pipes and fittings, are critical to successful installations and we look at the functioning of a PCV and the tempering valve where the latter can now be tested, a shortcoming in the past.
Our Tell me Why series continues and plays an important part in showing that plumbing is essential and should not be considered as some second thought career choice. While we commend those in government encouraging learners to consider entering the trades, it would be good if they did so with some enthusiasm. The reality is that not everyone is geared toward a degree course but are far better entering a trade. This little piece reinforces why plumbing is a good choice.
“A father, talking about his three sons that are all doctors, was asked what his fourth son did. ‘He is a plumber,’ he replied, ‘who do you think paid for the others to become doctors?’”
