A study has found that there are dangerously high levels of arsenic contained in the drinking water of the villages of Maswanganyi and Muyexe in the Giyani municipality, Limpopo.

A report co-authored by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) states that villagers have higher than acceptable levels of arsenic in their blood from consuming the water. It is believed that the arsenic has come from contaminated soil and borehole water.

Scientists say that this could stem from there being naturally high levels of arsenic in the area, or that the arsenic contamination may come from a nearby gold mine.
