Following the success of our previous ‘Plumbing Apprentices’ series last year, this year we have started a new series that shares the experiences of women who have entered the plumbing industry. This month we feature Michelle van Rensburg from IOPSA.

What do you do at IOPSA?

I am the National Secretary for the National Executive Committee, and responsible for IOPSA’s finance and administration. I am based at the National Office in Johannesburg.

What is the best part of your job?

The seventh day of every month: when the bank accounts have reconciled, the big green tick in Quickbooks – “you did it” – which means that I can submit the month end reporting. And let me not forget the people (the “IOPSA family”) and our members.

What is the downside of your job?

I enjoy my job – but I don’t want to sound boring – so the crazy busyness and not having enough time in a working day, which could mean having to work longer hours.

How do you handle these downsides?

Time management, power walks, breathing, challenging myself to resolve issues in the quickest way possible to save time and learning to rely on assistance.

What do you believe plumbing is all about?

I believe plumbing is about the plumber.

Who do you work for?

I report directly to the Executive Director, Brendan Reynolds, but I believe that I have a responsibility to the IOPSA Members.

Would you consider yourself to be a team player?

Absolutely.

What advice would you offer to women looking at plumbing as a potential career?

I will be surprised yet inspired and encourage the person to visit the IOPSA website for details, and should any uncertainty prevail, feel free to contact me. https://www.iopsa.org/How-to- become-a-plumber

Is there any other information that you would like to add?

Be the change you want to see.
