The theme was “Busting myths about partnering with big business.” Small business has the idea that partnering with big business is the solution. But where to start? The reality is big businesses started small, relatively speaking, but they had to build themselves up from a start.

However, partnering with them is more real, and requires a certain acceptance of their values. So, myth one that big businesses have vastly different expectations from any other customers, not so.

The reality is, what big companies need from smaller companies is what their customers want.

As a small company working with a big business, one is an extension of the work they are doing, and an extension of their brand, their professionalism and their values. An artisan is proud of their qualification, proud of their work and above all proud that they are working with big businesses.

Myth two is believing one can charge higher rates or prices if the client is a big company.

The truth is, not so. All businesses have set rates for set work and, workingfor big businesses, one falls in line with their requirements. It does not mean certain negotiations cannot take place, as this can contribute to one understanding pricing. The benefit of working with big businesses and at acceptable pricing means a long-term relationship which provides longer term income and work which may also grow enabling small businesses to grow and employ more people, etc.

Myth three, big companies only work with big companies. Not so.  Big businesses prefers working with smaller companies because they are more flexible. Furthermore, over time, the relationship and trust develop. Builds you up to offer a better and wider service. Training is offered by the likes of BluLever Education.

Paperwork – myth four. Nothing complicated about ‘paperwork’ today with access to software. You need such ‘paperwork’ to keep your affairs in order if you want to work with big businesses. Kandua becomes a partner in assisting here.

Myth five – one needs to know someone high up to get an opportunity. One needs to seek opportunities. Opportunities do not land at your feet. Best way to do that is networking. Many organisations exist that create networking opportunities, BluLever and Kandua are two, and official bodies like IOPSA are another for plumbing.Other artisan bodies have their own official bodies. At the end of the day, it is up to you to show and tell people what you do and what you are and who you work with. Above all be humble. Let your reputation and colleagues do the talking through recommendations.

In the next article we will feature the award winners and sponsors.
