Here, we interview and shine a spotlight on Kuvanya Chetty – Director at Afriplumb, recipient of IOPSA’S Lady of the Year Award for 2025, and IOPSA KZN vice chairperson.

How long have you been involved in the plumbing industry?
I have been involved in the plumbing industry for 13 years, and every year has brought new opportunities to learn, grow and make a meaningful impact.
What made you want to get into the plumbing industry?
I originally came from the electrical industry. Growing up, I watched my father – a Master Electrician – and his passion and dedication inspired my love for the trades. I have always enjoyed working with my hands and building something tangible. When the opportunity arose to make Afriplumb Projects my own, I took a leap of faith and turned that dream into a lifelong passion.
Did you always know you wanted to be in the plumbing industry? If not, what career did you want to pursue?
Not at all – I never imagined that I would end up in plumbing. My original dream was to follow in my father’s footsteps and become an electrician because I was introduced to the trade from a young age. I also have a real passion for teaching, so if I hadn’t pursued a trade, I would most likely have become a teacher. Looking back, though, I truly believe plumbing found me for a reason.
What advice do you have for anyone wanting to get into plumbing?
Go for it. Plumbing is one of the most rewarding careers you can choose. No two days are ever the same, every challenge teaches you something new, and there is always more than one way to solve a problem. Most importantly, plumbers play a vital role in protecting public health and improving people’s quality of life. It’s a career where you genuinely make a difference every single day.
What is your motto or philosophy when it comes to plumbing?
“Just because it’s not easy doesn’t mean it’s impossible.”
Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, improve and become better at what you do. Persistence, continuous learning, and taking pride in your workmanship are what set great plumbers apart.
Where do you currently work?
I am the director of Afriplumb Projects operating in all three provinces, where I have the privilege of leading an incredible team and delivering professional plumbing solutions while continuously driving excellence and innovation within our industry.

Jump in with both hands and both feet! The industry needs more women, and there has never been a better time to join. Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t belong. Your determination, skills and passion are what matter. Work hard, keep learning, and never underestimate what you’re capable of achieving. |
Kuvanya adds, “I am incredibly honoured to have been named IOPSA Lady of the Year 2025 and IOPSA KZN Vice Chairperson. These recognitions reflect not only my journey but also the support of the amazing mentors, colleagues, and industry professionals who have believed in me along the way.
“My goal has always been bigger than simply doing plumbing. I want to inspire the next generation, especially young women, to realise that there is a place for them in the trades. If my journey encourages even one person to chase their dreams without fear, then I know I’ve made a difference.”
