Several valuable topics were raised in the recent WELS Water Conference. Education was one of these.

The Department of Water and Sanitation is actively engaged in several key projects aimed at promoting water use efficiency and addressing critical challenges within the sector. These ministerial initiatives underscore a commitment to sustainable water management across South Africa.

One of the flagship programmes is the South African Youth Water Prize, a collaborative endeavour between the Department and the Stockholm International Water Institute. This competition, which progresses from provincial to national and ultimately international levels, encourages high school students to identify water-related issues in their communities or schools and develop innovative solutions. These solutions can range from awareness campaigns to inventive technological applications.

Beyond youth engagement, the Department implements comprehensive public education and awareness campaigns. The prominent “Blue Bus” campaign serves as a mobile billboard, travelling across provinces to raise visibility and disseminate crucial water conservation messages. These efforts are complemented by door-to-door campaigns, shopping centre activations, and participation in exhibitions. School visits are also undertaken to educate younger generations on water use efficiency. A particularly innovative project focuses on visible leak reporting on the streets. Recognising that widespread leaks contribute significantly to water loss, this initiative encourages citizens to report burst pipes and leaking meters, thereby assisting municipalities in addressing this prevalent issue.

Awareness programmes also extend to the agricultural sector, where specific materials are developed and distributed to emerging farmers. Furthermore, internal staff awareness campaigns are conducted, embodying the principle that effective change begins within the Department itself. This approach reinforces the message that water conservation is a collective responsibility.

Crucially, the Department places immense value on partnerships.

While numerous isolated initiatives exist across the country, a unified approach is deemed essential for maximum impact. Collaboration with various stakeholders is actively pursued to develop robust education and awareness programmes.

The Department believes that by working together, the message of water use efficiency can be effectively disseminated to a broader audience, including the plumbing sector and general consumers. The ongoing engagement with partners seeks to build upon existing support and leverage collective efforts to champion water conservation throughout South Africa.
