The Institute of Plumbing South Africa (IOPSA) has long been at the forefront of promoting professionalism, skills development and technical excellence within the South African plumbing industry. As a co-host of Plumbing Indaba 2026, IOPSA will play a leading role in delivering the event’s educational programme, including the highly anticipated Plumbing Olympics and CPD-accredited workshops.
Ahead of the event, Plumbing Africa spoke to the IOPSA team about their vision for the Plumbing Indaba, the importance of skills development, and what visitors can look forward to on 22–23 July 2026 at Marks Park Sports Club in Emmarentia, Johannesburg.
What does the Plumbing Indaba mean for the future of the South African plumbing industry?
The Plumbing Indaba represents a turning point for the industry. It is a platform where compliance, skills and innovation converge, ensuring that South Africa’s plumbers are equipped to meet modern demands. By bringing together professionals, regulators and suppliers, the Indaba strengthens the industry’s credibility and sets a clear path toward higher standards, sustainability and professional recognition.
Why is it important for plumbers to attend industry events such as this?
Industry events are more than networking opportunities – they are essential for staying current with regulations, technology and best practices. Plumbers who attend the Indaba will gain access to expert knowledge, practical training, and exposure to new tools and solutions. From a skills and professional development perspective, what are you hoping the Olympics will achieve?
The Plumbing Olympics is designed to showcase excellence in practice. By simulating real-world technical challenges, it highlights the importance of precision, safety and efficiency.
Our goal is to inspire apprentices and professionals alike to continuously improve their skills, while also demonstrating to the public the high level of expertise required in plumbing. Ultimately, it’s about raising the bar and instilling pride in the craft.
What do you hope delegates will take away from the event?
We hope delegates leave with three key takeaways:
- A renewed commitment to compliance and professionalism.
- Practical insights and tools they can apply immediately in their businesses.
- A sense of belonging to a strong, forward-looking industry community.

What was the inspiration or cause behind creating the Plumbing Olympics?
The Plumbing Olympics was born out of a desire to celebrate the skill and dedication of plumbers. Too often, plumbing is undervalued despite being critical to health, safety and sustainability. By creating a competitive, high-profile event, we aim to showcase the technical excellence of the trade, inspire the next generation, and elevate the public perception of plumbing as a respected and essential profession.
