Chris Coetzee, a health and safety consultant, has achieved an international qualification from NEBOSH in Occupational Health and Safety.

Chris Coetzee is no stranger to studying and has dedicated a great deal of time to growing his knowledge and skills. This experienced health and safety consultant runs his own company, specialising in safety management and health compliance, among other things.
Coetzee has added another qualification to his list: Level 6 International Occupational Health and Safety Management Diploma from the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), based in the UK. The Diploma was awarded to Coetzee in October last year.
The two-year course comprised three exams, and it did pose somewhat of a challenge for Coetzee, who says, “I would say that the biggest challenge was studying the international legislation for Occupational Health and Safety and then referencing it all back to our own South African Legislation, and then taking the knowledge I have learnt to make it applicable to what I find within our own industries within SA; while at the same time ensuring I am prepared for the exams which are based off of the international OHS laws.”
Coetzee credits the course for providing him with a deeper understanding of international laws around health and safety as well as the practical skills that come with the qualification. The diploma allows those who qualify on types of legislation likely to apply, identify and effectively communicate relevant health and safety information as well as contribute to risk management strategy. Of course, there is a whole host of other things that enable those qualified to do – including managing contractors and supply chains to ensure that health and safety legislation is adhered to, promoting a positive health and safety culture, and to develop and audit health and safety management systems.
