At the Plumbing Industry Awards hosted on 18 September 2025, a special announcement was made – the introduction of the IOPSA Legends, an award introduced to honour the legendary figures in the industry. These individuals were awarded a belt with a one-of-a-kind buckle, inscribed with their name and a serial number. They were also asked to sign their names in the IOPSA book – an immortalisation in IOPSA’s hall of fame. Here, we profile Chris Burgess, an IOPSA legend.

Chris Burgess became an apprentice plumber in 1971, working on the Carlton Centre Project under Hilan Duklauer, after qualifying as a plumber in 1976 with C A Sham Plumbers. He has been in the plumbing industry for 54 years.When asked about the value that IOPSA offers to him as a member, Chris states “IOPSA has given me the opportunity to learn from like-minded professionals, to share knowledge, and to be part of an organisation that uplifts and unites our industry in every way.”
We asked, what does the Legend Award mean to you?
“For me, the Legend Award is a recognition of many years of contribution – going all the way back to its inception in 1988. My motivation has always been: How can I make a difference to others and help build a better industry? I feel privileged to stand among legends I will always admire, honour and respect.”

| Chris’ advice to plumbers
Of course, keep upskilling yourself in both plumbing and business skills. But just as importantly, work on yourself – focus on the soft skills, learning how to listen, communicate and interact with people. Technical ability will open doors, but people skills will keep them open. |
