At the Plumbing Industry Awards hosted on 18 September 2025, a special announcement was made – the introduction of the IOPSA Legends, an award to honour the legendary figures in the industry. These individuals were awarded a belt with a one-of-a-kind buckle, inscribed with their name and a serial number. They were also asked to sign their names in the IOPSA book – an immortalisation in IOPSA’s hall of fame. Here, we profile Rudi van der Merwe, an IOPSA legend.

Having qualified as a plumber at Olifantsfontein, Rudi has been involved in the plumbing industry since 2000. He states that even with 25 years of experience in the industry, he is still learning every single day.When asked about the value that IOPSA offers to him as a member, Rudi states “I value the ongoing training that IOPSA provides, which keeps me up to date with the latest plumbing materials and innovations year after year.”

We asked, what does the Legend Award mean to you?
“To be recognised as one of only nine Legends of 2025 is truly an honour. It motivates me to continue contributing to the plumbing industry, supporting IOPSA, and uplifting fellow plumbers in the Free State.”
