“In a startling revelation about the state of mental health care in South Africa, reports indicate that up to 92% of individuals living with mental health conditions do not receive the necessary treatment” (The Star).

In the trades, we carry more than tools, we carry pressure, pride and sometimes pain. Supplied by IOPSA
October is recognised Mental Health awareness Month, with World Mental Health Day being held on 10 October annually – a day that aims to raise awareness about mental health issues, and promote global action for mental health support. This year, mental health day coincides with a new IOPSA initiative led by Chris Coetzee from OHSS Consulting and a dedicated team of members, known as Friends in the Trades (or FIIT).
Mental Health Awareness – the struggle
By Chris Coetzee, OHSS Consultant
Let us look at some areas in which plumbers may experience mental distress due to the scope of work they provide:
- Long hours worked
- High workloads – which can lead to frustration, strain, distress, depression, anxiety and fatigue
- Physical pain
- Lack of social support
- Inappropriate safety equipment
The construction industry is facing a critical challenge, which is the silent struggle of mental health among its workforce. This issue requires immediate attention and should not be ignored any longer. By acknowledging the problem, raising awareness and introducing supportive measures, we can assist those in the construction industry to lead healthier and happier lives. We must shift our focus from the physical aspects of construction to the mental well-being of those who build our world today.
What is Friends in the Trades (FITT)
FITT is a new programme that has been established to both help and raise awareness for mental health concerns. The team will be led by Chris Coetzee from OHSS Consulting, a dedicated team of members, and IOPSA. The programme works on the bases that there is strength in asking for help and will focus on mental health within the trades specifically.
