As a plumber, you know the importance of getting each installation right the first time. Whether it’s for a busy commercial bathroom or a client looking for a quick upgrade, the process needs to be efficient, reliable, and hassle-free. Bear in mind SANS 497 – Ceramic Urinals.

This step-by-step guide will help you install a urinal with ease.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Materials

Ensure you have all the necessary tools and materials, which may vary based on the urinal and supplier. Generally, you will need:

  • Urinal unit
  • Mounting hardware
  • PVC pipes
  • Bottle trap (for drainage)
  • Pipe wrench and adjustable wrench
  • Measuring tape
  • Spirit level
  • Plumber’s tape
  • Silicone sealant

Step 2: Prepare the Installation Site

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply: Prevent leaks during installation by shutting off the water supply.
  2. Determine the Height: You will need to measure and mark the height on the wall where the urinal will be mounted. Again, SANS 497 provides these requirements.
  3. Mark Mounting Points: Use the urinal to mark where mounting brackets or bolts will attach to the wall.

Step 3: Install the Mounting Brackets

Drill holes at marked points and secure the mounting brackets or bolts. Avoid over-tightening to prevent wall damage.

Step 4: Install the Drainage System

Attach the bottle trap to the drainage outlet and connect it to the main drainpipe with PVC pipes. Check for leaks by pouring water into the urinal to ensure smooth drainage.

Step 5: Connect the Water Supply

Depending on the urinal, install a manual flush valve or an automatic sensor system. Attach the water supply line to the valve, using plumber’s tape for sealing.

Step 6: Secure the Urinal to the Wall

Place the urinal on the mounting brackets, secure it with nuts and washers, and use a spirit level to ensure it’s horizontal.

Step 7: Seal the Edges

Apply silicone sealant around the edges to prevent water leaks and mold growth.

Step 8: Turn On the Water Supply and Test

Turn on the water and test the urinal by flushing multiple times.
